Louis and Bruno appear on Sky TV’s ‘Extra Time Sky Sports’

The UK’s top two slalom racers, ‘Slipa’ Selby and Bruno Oliveira, give out about the UK slalom racing scene on Sky Sports. The program was first aired at 6:00pm, Monday 31st October 2011, on Sky Sports 2, with repeats to be shown on Sky 3 and 4.

Extra Time Sky Sports – Slalom Skateboarding with Bruno Oliveira and Louis Selby

As part of the Extra Time Sky Sports program, many thanks go to Miles Murphy and the TVCGroup.com for putting the feature together and making it happen.

Miles is currently off-games for fracturing his ribs whilst skating at Palace, but he’ll be back on board soon and taking on Louis and Bruno in the Spring!

Hogtoberfest, 15th – 16th October 2011, Hog Hill

The UKSSA had been invited along to race at the Hogtoberfest event by Timmy Peters, one of the Southampton University crew, who had set the event up as a fun weekend featuring  various workshops and downhill races for all skill levels. He had also encouraged universities to bring “fresher’s” along to share the stoke of downhill skating in all of its disciplines.

The mid October weather was very kind to us, with clear skies and glorious autumn sunshine bringing riders out in their droves. Louis and I got sign up going whilst Michael and an army of willing volunteers got the ramps and timing set up and Bruno and his helpers set the Hybrid course. Mick Reiss came along to watch the proceedings and very kindly offered to run the spreadsheets for the day.

We actually started our racing a lot later than anticipated this was largely due to Louis and I manning the main Hogtoberfest sign-up desk, it took almost an hour and a half to register the 150+ longboarders, downhillers, buttboarders, slalomers and in-liners who had shown up for the weekend. This is something that needs to be addressed for future events, we need to move away from people paying on the day where possible, it just takes far too long and eats in to precious time that could otherwise be spent on the track – but I digress!

The Rabbit Race, Amsterdam, 1st – 2nd October 2011

Ernst vs Markus in the Tight Final

Race Report by Rob

The last scheduled race on the Dutch calendar took place on the hottest October weekend on record in Europe. The first ever Longboard Only Marathon had been held on the Saturday. Which saw skaters completing 18 gruelling laps around the Sport Park Sloten 2.2Km cycle track to make the 26 mile skate – no mean feat in that heat. The Race was eventually won by Paul Brunninkhuis who completed the Marathon distance in 1 hour 44 minutes with an average speed of 24 MPH.

UKSSA Visit Cyclopark

Last Saturday Sam Gordon, Paul Coupe and I visited the new Cyclopark facility in Northfleet near Gravesend in Kent. The facility has yet to be completed but we went to check it out for suitability as another race venue and an alternative to Hog Hill, which next year is booked solid due to the Olympics.

The cycle track itself is 2.9km in length and around 6 meters wide. Whilst much of the track is sloping there are no steeper sections like those at Hog Hill. There is a very nice section with a little bridge going over it, which would be perfect for dual tight or hybrid racing and reminded us of a scaled down version of Brands Hatch. The surface is ultra smooth and we hope to have a test session there in the next month or so – a full report will follow.

Glastonbury Ales NASS Open Slalom Championships, Shepton Mallett 9/10th July 2011

It was NASS! Mud, rain, sunburn, angry teens, pasties, rides, rock and racing.

Ella at NASS 2011

Race Report by Rob

This was the 4th year the UKSSA had raced at the Relentless NASS festival and was once again our racing was sponsored by those stalwarts at Glastonbury Ales.
The queue to get in was horrendous for me and Tom – 2 hours being made to stand in the competitor queue, (in a heavy shower for part of it!), when all we needed to do was hand in a waiver and collect a wristband! This year we were all issued “Hospitality” wristbands which pretty much got you in everywhere. At least the Athlete Camping was closer than previous years – in the field adjacent to the Production Car Park – although you still had to go through the main site to get to it. After setting up we went into the madness of the “wasted yoof” in search of the Glastonbury Ales Cider Shack and check out the Athlete Lounge.
