Congratulations to ‘lone wolf’ Richard Searle for his performance at the NAONED Open Slalom competion in Nantes held over the weekend 11-12 July. Richard won the Top Master trophy at the event organised by Franck Pannetier. Franck recently let Richard use his board at the Désaxé World Ride when his bag went missing in transit. As a thank you Richard said he would go along and support his event….and pick up a few Prime status points into the bargain. Well Done Sir.

Pavel Skates Newest Recruit – Pig City’s Mmedo Duffort.

I always knew he was destined for greatness……Mmedo at NASS, July 2011

Congratulations to Pig City’s Mmedo Duffort on being scooped up by Donald Campbell to become Pavel Racing’s newest recruit. Mmedo joins Brits, Paul Price, Sam Gordon and Louis Selby on the UK Pavel Team. On announcing his news Mmedo had this to say “I am (truly) proud to have joined the Pavel crew and will be supported in my slalom adventures by just about the raddest skateboard maker out there! For over 30 years, Pavel has been at the core of the skate scene. The Paul Price Roadster model that came out 10 years ago completely changed the game. Several successful models later, the new GS Roadster is out! I will be bombing it down the GS at Hog Hill in two weeks time.
Big up to Donald “the Don” Campbell for making the most amazing boards and supporting the slalom scene. Stoked to join my friend Louis (I could not wish for a better traveling mate) and obviously honored to be joining the Pavel team and its amazing riders!
Pavel Skates?!! Fuck yeah!”

At Turn & Burn, July 2013.

In the last couple of years Mmedo has been travelling over Europe with Louis Selby and the British Team to attend races. He put in a really solid performance at last years World Championships in the Czech Republic where he took 3rd overall in the Amateur Category and after a good start to the year he is currently lying in 4th place in the ISSA 2015 World Rankings making him the top ranked British Amateur.

Well done Mmedo, well earned – well deserved.

Fresh Pavel Goodies courtesy of that very nice Mr Donald Campbell – including the new Paul Price GS Roadster.

Turn & Burn @ Paddle Around the Pier, 4th/5th July 2015

All set up and ready to roll.

Once again it was time to take in some sea air and sun down in Pig City at the annual Turn & Burn race at the Paddle Around the Pier beach festival.

Saturday kicked off with Tight slalom and after a nice relaxed practice session we began the qualifying around 1.00pm under the warm afternoon sun. Just to make a change we decided to run the B group through first. Small in number it may have been but it was hotly contested and newcomer Polina Fokicheva was giving everyone a run for their money. She was getting faster with every run and only narrowly missed out on 3rd place to Tom Shafeie. Alec Brown took second spot with a delighted Paul Borrell taking the top place on the podium.

We ran straight in to the A group round of 16 after the B group final, locals Mmedo Duffort and Ben Williams had set the best times for the Pig City Crew with Harry and Louis qualifying in first and second place respectively.  The first rounds saw some good close evenly matched races which made for good entertainment for the swelling crowds.  Soon we were down to just Harry, Louis, Mmedo and Trevor Baker. The round of four would see Mmedo face against Harry and Louis would race against Trevor who had been on fire all day.

As has been the case each time they have raced Louis and Harry were again destined to meet in the final. An uncharacteristic DQ by Trevor in the round of four would see him face off against Mmedo in the consolation round. In the final Harry ran super quick and clean beating Louis by just over half a second over the two legs to claim 1st place. In the consolation round two consistently quick runs by Mmedo were enough to relegate Trevor to fourth place.

Now that’s an action shot! Trevor Baker “pings” the last cone as he crosses the line just behind Mmedo. Photo by Andy Turner

Simon Levene and Mick Reiss dropped in to say “Hi” and check on proceedings. Mick spent some time with Mmedo and gave him a bit of a pumping masterclass. It’s always nice to catch up with Mick. It would be even nicer to see him skate again!

We rapidly packed up and stashed the ramps behind the security fence and headed for home – or local pubs as was the case for Louis whose birthday it was. Andy, Tom and I had fun and games trying to get off site. The Health and Safety police weren’t going to let us drive off until 8.30pm which was when “vehicle movements were allowed”. We all looked at one another and decided that we weren’t waiting for three hours to go home – that clearly wasn’t going to happen. We pleaded our case and after much mumbling into walkie talkies by the “vis-vested men” they finally agreed to escort us out. It was at this point that we were advised that we would need to get the van in on Sunday by 8.30am due to “movement restrictions” during the festival opening. It meant Andy and I would have a bit of an early start in the morning but nothing we couldn’t handle.

Halfway to Brighton on Sunday morning the heavens opened and the rain came down by the bucket load. By the time we arrived on the seafront at about 7.55am you couldn’t see a hand in front of your face. After sitting in the van for over an hour and a half I went and spoke to a few locals and a couple of stall holders who had consulted weather apps – all which said that the rain was set to continue until about 4.00pm. After careful consideration and with the prospect of getting the van stuck there all day in the rain until 6.30pm I made the call and cancelled the days official racing so that we could get word up on social media pages quickly. We hastily packed up the ramps, getting soaked into the proceedings, and called it a day! Even then we had to sneak out past the Health and Safety people we had argued with the day before. By this time it was 9.45am, props to Andy for “creeping” a long wheelbase Transit past them right under their noses!

Sunday morning at the race site!

For those that made it down later on Sunday Mmedo organised a mini league where everyone got to race each other. The winning order was determined by the rider with the most wins. It was good that something could be salvaged from what started out as an awful day.

The Sunday Crew featuring Vincent Tanguy (blue helmet) who was visiting from France.

Big Thanks to Dom Barrette and the Pig City Crew, James and Ocean Sports, Michael Stride and Octane Sport, Kryptonics, Andy Turner and Mark Phelps.

Désaxé World Ride #9, Grenoble 27th/28th June

Report by Mmedo Duffort

Probably the best Giant Slalom location in Europe?

After our Swiss adventures, Grenoble provided a different challenge for Team GB. Again, Louis, Richard and myself flew to Switzerland only to find that Richard’s bag had opted for a different destination – or no destination at all as it turned out. We waited for a while but with one of the finest GS courses in Europe waiting for us we eventually made a dash for it.

As per last year, the Désaxé World Ride festival managed to close a road at the foot of the Alps where a dozen excellent international riders met early on Friday afternoon. Unlike last year, the GS was moved further up hill which provided a faster, safer ride with a truly stunning backdrop. Fast it certainly was, especially towards the end, and all three Brits managed to crash at some point over the course of the afternoon. Richard, who had borrowed Franck Pannetier’s board was unfortunate to hit the ground whilst attempting a massive slide at the end of his first run. Louis and I crashed within seconds of one another whilst filming each others ride down the course. Lucky for both, this was after the race. To be fair, our slams were minor when compared to Richard’s who carried evidence of it the whole weekend.  With the first run races through I surprisingly found myself ahead of Janis Kuzmins (only ranked number 1 in the world!). Oh, the sweet sound of that announcement. But it was not to last and I eventually finished in fifth place, just one ahead of Louis.

Louis is a fine friend but a fierce competitor and he made sure over the course of the weekend that the order was restored, taking fifth in the special and in the hybrid. Richard, who let’s forget rode borrowed gear throughout the weekend, did very well in an extremely competitive field (think racers from Latvia, Germany, Spain battling it out against the French #1 and #2), taking 12th place overall, with Louis finishing fifth whilst I took sixth. Full results available from the ISSA website.

The Three Musketeers – Louis, Mmedo and Richard

The weekend was notable for the lack of rain, the abundance of good food and wine and the general friendliness of the competition. For those wanting a nice race abroad, this is definitely one to consider. The Special and Hybrid are run on flat but on a very good surface and the Giant is worth the trip alone. Oh and Richard eventually got his bag back……

Slalom World Cup Grüningen, Switzerland – 20th/21st June 2015 – Field Report

Report by Richard Searle

Team Shot L – R Richard Searle, Mmedo Duffort and Louis Selby.

I like slalom, you like slalom, that skateboarding dog on YouTube likes slalom – and everybody who likes slalom loves a good slalom race, especially a good international race; the first to the pique interest of Team GB this season was The Slalom World Cup, at Gruningen in Switzerland.

‘It’s a lovely little race.’ Michael Stride (Octane Sport-ist) assured us at the previous Hog Hill event; accordingly, Louis Selby (UK No.1 Pro), Mmedo Duffort (UK no.1 AM), and my good self (an ageing mod) signed up.

My flight arrived earlier than Mmedo and Louis’, Friday evening. I was to rendezvous at Zurich airport with race organizer, Jadranko, and Team Latvia, then driven to the location; the remaining Brits were due to arrive an hour later. Once decanted into the van and safely on route, Jadranko mentioned a text that he’d received from the remaining British riders, Mmedo and Louis had missed their flight!

‘Oh dear,’ I said, or words to that effect.

We drove through the beautiful Swiss countryside as the sun set across the sweeping glades and pine wooded hills, cows grazed lazily and local townsfolk dinned alfresco on the terraces of ornately decorated ski-lodges; Stridey was right, it was indeed the perfect chocolate-box location for a skateboard race. We finally neared our destination, the sleepy hamlet of Gruningen; Jadranko slowed the vehicle to a crawl, so as not to disturb the peace, manoeuvered carefully between some winding lanes and rumbled up a long dark drive before pulling to a halt.

     ‘Here,’ he announced.

Team Latvia whispered concerns and peered pensively out the van windows. We climbed from the vehicle and was greeted by German grumbler, Peter Jachman, and the French number ones’ Chris and Michel Dupont; they seemed confused. We were parked in a large grey lot, behind a fire station, in the middle of a very non-picturesque industrial estate.

‘Where is the the race location?’ Monsieur Dupont asked Jadranko.

‘Right here, it looks much nicer in the daylight…..when it’s sunny.’

We were shown to our accommodation, an oppressive cold-war era underground fall-out shelter, with cramped cells containing three-tiered ten-man iron bunks, three toilet cubicles and one cold shower between the forty racers; we bedded down for the night. It could be worse, I thought.

There was still no sign of Mmedo or Louis.

After a sleepless night of stale air and concrete amplified snoring, I queued for twenty-five minutes to take my ablutions and ventured outside; the race was due to start in an hour. Two dishevelled figures stumbled down the entrance ramp towards me, it was Mmedo and Louis – they’d slept outside in a hire car. It transpired that they’de secured the next available flight to Switzerland (Geneva, the opposite side of the country) where upon Mmedo drove through the night, arriving at Gruningen at 4.30am. I turned on my phone, I had a text, it was from Mmedo sent at 5am ‘where is the bunker?’ it said.

‘Where is the race location?’ Louis asked, rubbing his swollen eyes with his knuckles .

‘Right here,’ I said, ‘It looks much better when its sunny.’

Louis peered back towards the flooded industrial expanse….the stream running down the centre of race slope and the heavy clouds that were pissing rain.

      ‘What about the GS spot?’

‘No GS.’ I explained, ‘they didn’t get permission to use the hill.’

The rain stopped mid-way through Saturday afternoon, the cones were set, ramps uncovered, practice runs attempted on the deceptively tight straight course, and then the Pros set their qualifying times, followed by the Ams. The final cut was top eight in each category, Louis didn’t make the Pro race, neither did I in the Ams (there was no Masters category), but Mmedo, despite driving though the night and sleeping in a Fiat 500, made the cut for the Amateur race with the third fastest time. Unfortunately Team Latvia secured the top slot in the Ams, Mmedo narrowly missing the podium. Predictably, race favourite, Latvia’s Janis Kuzmins took first place in the Straight Pro race.

And then it rained.

There was barely enough time for the Pro’s to set a qualifying time on the re-set Hybrid course during the remaining hour of dry weather that evening; Louis again successfully avoiding the cut.

And then it rained.

And didn’t stop until Monday.

The Crackling, Hog Hill, 23rd/24th May – Race Report

A pair of prize decks!

This is the 8th year that UKSSA have been running slalom events at Hog Hill and once again The Crackling is theUK slalom season opener. Unlike our early races these days Hog Hill events are large multi-disciplined meetings. Timmy Peters’ DAS Industries crew provided the logistics for running the weekends Longboard and Downhill elements ably assisted by Jorge Higgins and Jamie Tharp.

This year saw Freestyle making its debut at Hog Hill when Tony Gale and crew from British Freestyle joined us on the Saturday. They attracted a fair amount of attention from those that had not witnessed freestyle up close and personal before and much praise and appreciation from the slalomers that dabble. In fact Freestyle slotted into the mix so well I am pleased to announce that it will feature at future events. Freestyle has always been popular amongst the slalom community as it gives a racer something to do between heats at bigger races. The smaller boards easily fit into your skate bag when heading off to those European events too – give it a whirl if you don’t already? If you’re interested in freestyle checkout the British Freestyle Skateboarding Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/groups/freestyleskatingUK/

Tony Gale – Freestyle is go at Hog Hill!

The now customary Saturday rain delay kicked in right on cue during set up and registration. Rain eventually turned to drizzle which gave way to light breeze and sunshine allowing slalom proceedings to finally get underway just before 3.00pm.

After a rapid qualifying session we were soon ready to begin the elimination rounds. The cut for the A Group was the top 8 and the rest of the field made up the B Group. Harry Phelps had opted to freeride and generally tear it up sliding so the stage was set for an interesting battle for top spot in the A Group.

In the round of 8 Louis went through with ease after a disastrous double DQ by Tiago Fanha who had skated so well in qualifying. Then Paul Taylor Crush was squeezed out by Ben Williams despite his cone spraying first run. In the heat between the ever improving Richard Searle and Sam Gordon it was all down to the second run as both had DQ’d their first. Age and experience won through in the end with “The Child’s Father” Sam advancing by almost a second and a half. Mmedo also went into the round of 4 with comparative ease after John Nicholas’ had hefty cone counts in both of his runs. The Round of 4 heats would be Louis against Ben and Sam versus Mmedo. Another bout of cone spraying meant that Ben had to settle for place in the Consolation Round. An extremely close finish saw Mmedo go into the second run with just a 0.01 second advantage over Sam regardless of a cone penalty. Both riders hit cones on their next runs but Mmedo just edged Sam out leaving him to face Ben.  In the Final Louis took the first run with both riders hitting one cone. In the second Mmedo hit one cone and crossed the line ahead of Louis but the seasoned Pavel rider had run clean which was enough to clinch the top podium spot. In the Consolation round Ben’s cone count was to be his downfall once again leaving Sam to claim the remaining spot on the podium.

While we had good conditions we opted to run straight into the B Group through to conclusion if time allowed – which it did. Despite a valiant effort Sabina Edwards failed to qualify and so that left 8 riders. Fast qualifying times by Tiago had been enough to nudge board collector extraordinaire Paul Coupe into the B Group where he would be racing Dill Hill. The other heats would be between relative newcomer Ben Dorling and Paul Borell, Andy Turner would go up against Alec Brown and Trevor Hickey would take on Gavin Palfrey.  Dill sprayed a few cones too many and so helped send Paul through to the next round and yet more “cone’age” by Paul B. saw Ben advance. The cone count also played a part in Alec being taken out in his heat against Andy: and an unfortunate second run DQ by Trev meant Gav went on to take the last slot in the Round of 4 racing Andy.  In the first heat Ben put up a great fight crossing the line in 16.170 just .03 behind Paul but sadly the 5 cone penalties he picked up gave Paul a 0.53 advantage. Consistency was the name of the game and Ben recorded the same time in his second run this time only pinging 2 cones, but Paul had put in a faster clean run earning him his place in the final. Andy would go on to meet Paul in the final after his victory over Gav by a margin of 0.77 seconds.  The consolation round was between Ben and Gav, sadly a first run DQ by Ben left him with too much to do and so it was Gav that secured 3rd place.  In the final the raw times in both runs were very close, but sadly for Andy he had hit a few too many cones leaving Paul to take the B Group crown.

Sunday saw a very welcome return to Hog Hill for Alan and Derek Featherstone. As has previously been documented here Derek was very active at promoting slalom in the late 70’s and into the 80’s especially at Brands Hatch. The UK Slalom scene has much to thank him for. Also joining us for the day was photographer and all round diamond geezer (Mad) Mike John. This was his first visit to Hog Hill and I think he was impressed with what he saw? For those that don’t know Mike he was one of the photographers that worked on RAD magazine way back. You may have noticed a RAD sticker on his flash gun?

By the time the Giant Slalom course was set and final adjustments made the overcast sky had thinned a little allowing the sun to peep through now and then but at least it was dry. The riders soon began queuing at the start ramp ready to take their practice runs through the fast winding course. The GS always provides great entertainment for spectators and competition for top spot is always fierce. In GS the racers have three timed runs and it is their fastest time that is recorded. The lead changed several times as times started to improve, each run a crucial few seconds faster than the previous one. Having been beaten by Louis in the Hybrid Mmedo was out for revenge and after a couple of amazingly close runs he found himself in first place with a time of 20.68 seconds just a tenth of a second faster than Louis on 20.69. Despite Sam donning his Lycra to lessen wind resistance he was unable to better either of the top times and had to settle for 3rd place with 21.24. It is worth a mention that after the GS had finished Mmedo took another run and blasted an even faster time of 20.46.

Sam blasting down the GS course.

With the serious racing over a couple of impromptu courses were thrown down for people that wanted to skate. Everyone could now relax, eat, drink, buy stuff or just talk skate, take photos and enjoy the rest of the day until it was time for the prize giving.
